Education
I hold a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology (summa cum laude) from Union University, where I was active in student government as president of the Honors Student Association. In addition to studying psychology, I took classes in piano, English literature, biblical studies, ancient Greek, and ancient Hebrew. I am grateful for the sampling of diverse academic subjects offered by a liberal arts education, and I continue to expand on my interests in music, biblical studies, and languages. Education is a life-long process, and all academic subjects reflect the wisdom and glory of God.
Experience
Hi, I’m Kent Smith, and I have been helping people reach their potential since 2007. That’s when I joined a national test preparation company and began teaching the Law School Admission Test (LSAT®), which features logical reasoning and reading comprehension. As a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, I have always excelled in academic tests, and after extensive practice I earned a score of 178 (above the 99th percentile) on the LSAT®. I have helped students get ready for a wide range of tests, including the LSAT®, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT®), the Graduate Record Examination (GRE®), and the ACT®. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language in Ecuador, Taiwan, and mainland China. After experience with diverse academic subjects, I have come to specialize in teaching academic entrance examinations as well as quantitative subjects such as mathematics and statistics. I will work through problems with you, providing as much or as little guidance as you need at each step. As you gain skill in rearranging and simplifying mathematical expressions, you will develop intuition for where to start in the problem-solving process, and discover principles to unlock families of related problems. As your knowledge and skill grow, you will gain confidence to solve increasingly complex problems. We can identify areas that need special attention, and adapt our sessions to capitalize on your individual strengths. If you are preparing for an entrance examination such as the GRE®, GMAT®, ACT®, or SAT®, I can share test-taking strategies to help in navigating the test. For example, I can show you how to find the most important information in reading comprehension passages, which helps in grasping key points while moving quickly through each passage. I can also give you tips for managing your time in each test section, pointers for drafting strong responses to essay questions, and methods for breaking complicated questions into simpler parts. If you would like to increase your understanding of mathematics and hone your analytical reasoning skills, please contact me to discuss your needs. Our initial consultation by telephone will be complimentary, and my rate for online tutoring is $40/hr. (Please see below for my policies on late arrivals and late cancellations.) I look forward to meeting you, and best wishes as you pursue your educational goals! Late arrivals, late cancellations, and missed appointments: As my tutoring business has grown and my schedule of appointments has become increasingly full, I have reduced flexibility to accommodate late changes to planned meetings. Since late changes typically do not leave enough time for me to schedule meetings with other students in the time that was subject to cancellation, I have found it necessary to adopt the following policy for changes to scheduled appointments: 1. Late rescheduling: In the event that you notify me of a need to cancel or reschedule an appointment within one hour before the appointment time, you will incur a charge for thirty minutes of tutoring. 2. Late arrival: In the event that you are late to an appointment, tutoring time will be calculated from the beginning of our scheduled appointment. 3. Missed appointment: In the event that you miss an appointment, you will incur a charge for one hour of tutoring. Of course, I may make exceptions to these policies at my discretion. Thank you for your understanding!
